Should You Eat Before or After Walking?

Lise writes to ask if she should eat before or after walking. The answer is yes, but not too much. It is best not to start on empty, so it is good to have at least a light snack if you haven’t eaten since the night before. Fruit juice, a piece of fruit, or sports drink is fine if you don’t want anything solid. After a moderate intensity walk or other moderate to high intensity exercise, it is good to have a snack that includes protein and carbohydrates, to give your body the building blocks for new muscles and blood vessels.

If you like a hearty breakfast or had a big lunch, it is best to wait three to four hours before intense exercise. An easy walk should be OK, but doing anything vigorous may produce stomach discomfort.
